I wanted to write something about secrets to living the life you want and how you can go to your future. You have dreams that have become a challenge attain or impossible to reach. How can you become the best? When do you think of the future? Some people think, it is not something that is far away but in fact it’s the next hour or day or week or months is your future. I believe, the greatest threat to the future is the past. Over 80-90 percent of people in the world fear to go to the future and only 10-20 percent are willing to face the unknown future. People are dying because of fear and ignorance.

They live according to a revision, not a vision. What is a revision? It means going back to look at something you already did. When I was in college like most of you, we used to do revision. It means reading back what was taught earlier. When you prepare to take a test or exams, you do revision i.e. living the past. Most of the people are doing a revision of their instead of living their vision.

Proverbs 29: 18 is one of the best ideas from King Solomon. He said without a vision people perish and blessed is a man that keeps the law. Do you know what kills people? It is their past and revision. Or the lack of vision. This means people are busy remembering what happened and they cannot forget. Think of this with your life? There is a dream that you want but you are stuck and unable to move forward because of the past. Your dream is bigger than the nightmare or past that is blocking you. As a matter of fact, you can live the past and move to the future. You cannot succeed until you make the future more important than the past. You have to get past the past and move to the future. God is good that He forgets our past when we come to him God forgets your past. He takes your sin (past life, past behavior) and forgets about it. God forget all these things when you come to Jesus Christ. Your sin is canceled.

You cannot succeed until you make the future more important than the past. You have to get past the past and move to the future.

Jesus took care of the sin problem before man sinned. In Revelation and Hebrews, the Bible says Jesus was slain before the earth was founded. God made sure that your dreams are secured, even though you might have messed and that is why he forgets. When we come to Jesus Christ as our savior we can get back our dreams. That is why forgiveness is something God decided long before. God hates to see you fail, just as a manufacturer hates to see their product fail to work. He hates it because you are the product, created in His image and He made you, just like Him. Anything that interferes with your future must be forgotten. One of the words that I love is forget.

The Book of Philippians was written by a serial killer and persecuted the church. And I love what he wrote about forgetting in Philippians 3:10-14. His name is Saul(Paul). People interpreted his life because of his past and behavior. One day, he was going to attack the church leaders, God interferes with the plan on the Damascus. God introduced Paul to His Purpose. What did God see in this murderer? He saw 3 quarters of new testaments. He wrote most books of New Testament. This guy was walking around with these books on inside. If you met him what would you have called him? A killer, murderer, sinner and useless guy? Is this not how people judge others even today in your city, or community? We do that with people today.

People are trapped because of their past. Jesus never looked at what he did but looked at what he was carrying or his potential. Paul said things about his past and said something important to do. He said, I do one thing… forgetting what lies behind and press on to the future. If you are going to be successful in life, you must do one thing forget the past and press on to the goal ahead of you.
If you are going to be successful in life, you must do one thing forget the past and press on to the goal ahead of you.

Your current achievement is a hindrance to the next achievement. If you do not forget you never create new memories. Everyone must know we are the sum of all the decisions we made until today. If you keep making the same decision, that you made 5, 10, 20 or 30 years ago, then you will achieve the same results. Therefore, if you decide to do something different, you become different. If you make bad decisions, you get bad life. Good decisions lead to a good life.

Everyone must know we are the sum of all the decisions we made until today.

God told the children of Israel one time, I have set before you blessing and curses, life and death, then he said to choose life. Therefore, whatever happens in your life is your choice. This is found in Deuteronomy 30. Everything you decide to remember is your decision. Create a new memory, create new decisions and make the best decisions. Make the past the good to outweigh the bad past. Paul said, forget the past and press forward. Press in Hebrew means to lean away. Your future is waiting for you. You have to press because there is resistance. When you decide to do what you were born, you will get resistance. When you start to dream big, the small dreamers wake up. Paul said put pressure to move forward. Do not wait for opportunities but press forward.

Paul said I take hold of that which Christ. There is something that Paul knew he was created to do. He needed to take hold of it. He also said, Ephesians 2: 10,” For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Most people are working to run to heaven, but in fact, the bible says, we are to do good works. Let me explain this: When man sinned in the Garden, the assignment and good works were canceled. When you get saved(salvation), it is the repair process of the product to perform again. You get saved so you can do the good works. It means humans were born to do something, not to go somewhere… heaven fast.

Some people are waiting to go to heaven and I think it is the most boring thing to do. Most people are sad because they never go there fast. They stay on the planet without doing anything meaningful. I believe the final judgment statement is well-done my faithful servant. That means you need to discover what you were created to do. You need to discover it. It is hidden and it gets revealed to you in the form of a vision. Revelation is something that is unveiled. A revelation is a vision.

You need to discover it. It is hidden and it gets revealed to you in the form of a vision. Revelation is something that is unveiled. A revelation is a vision.

What are the things Paul needed to forget? Paul witnessed the death of Stephen and persecution in the Book of Acts That was a bad memory for him. Paul gave signals during the stoning of Stephen. I think he might have remembered, that Stephen would have written part of the new testament books. This thing must have haunted him. Paul had bad memories. If Paul lived in your city or community, you would write him off. The jails in your city are filled with great authors, great leaders, great pastors, great men, and women.

Sometimes, I think of leaders like Moses. Moses was a murderer, who killed an Egyptian. But God used him as a deliverer, leader, judge, and author. What have you done that is holding you back? The first five books were written by Moses. God gave Paul and Moses the most powerful revelations. David is another. What do we learn from these stories? Never cancel or condemn people. But thank God for forgetting. Because the future is more important than in the past.

Imagine Moses, telling God, who am I? You are telling me to go back to Egypt. Don’t you know am a killer, they are looking for me? Are you serious? God told Moses what he was born to do? God does not care what you have done if you are willing to do what he wants. Who cares of anything you have done? It was an event. That means if you fail, it’s your decision. Get on and live. Moses committed abortion, by killing a person who never finished living their lives. This is very important. Let me say it. It is after the tragedy that God does the greatest work. God allows you to get into crisis so you can testify and do great work.

If you fail, it’s because you decided not to succeed. If you lose it’s because you decided not to win. You must become like Paul. Our past is always a threat to our future and destiny. It is like a shadow or something that is waiting to pounce on us. For many people, our past is a constant threat to our dreams, ideas, visions, plans etc. Many people spend days, hours and minutes visiting their past and they have no time to go to the future. Most people live in the past and they never enter their future. Others live in the past and the past holds them.

If you fail, it’s because you decided not to succeed. If you lose it’s because you decided not to win.

How do we let the past go forever?

The key to living your future is letting go of the past. Our past controls the present and stops the visit or move to the future. The story of Isaiah in 54 verse 4 is another thing. Isaiah is a guy who was also struggling with his upbringing. It says, “Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood anymore.”

What does that mean? This verse is loaded with principles for dealing with the past. What do people fear most? Failure. That is why businessmen, never go back to do something they failed to do. That is why students who fail, never do it. We fear our failure. God says, tell the people you should not fear. You see, your past failure does not mean you will fail again. Instead, it’s an opportunity to learn. You will fail at something. Every successful person fails. Do not be afraid to fail. Make it okay to fail. Make failure your friend. I will fail even more in the future. If you understand success, then you should know failure is part of success. It is a component of success. God said do not be ashamed. Remember, this shame is not a permanent condition or situation. It is an event. Failure in life is an opportunity to begin again and it is a temporary experience or a classroom.

One of the greatest things I discovered in life is this. You will never experience personal grow in good times. Personal growth occurs in bad or difficult times. If there is no pressure, then there is no progress. Sometimes, I think we should ask God to bring more problems and pressure to you. When there is a crisis, you will grow, become innovative and creative. It is the pressure that brings progress of the dormant situation. If you never experience failure or tests of resolve, your resolutions with no gravity. When you decide to do something, life will test you. People who quit after the first failure never wanted to succeed. You cannot stop a man who decides to win. If you want to be effective in life, there has to be a promise, that you are going to win, no matter what happens. Between you and life, you have the resolution to win. You have to live life and life never gives you things. Life calls you names, lazy, timid and you have to prove it wrong. People who fail decided to fail. Nobody fails without their choice. God never accepted anyone as a failure. Jesus healed people who were written off. He knew they have the capacity to succeed.

You will never experience personal grow in good times. Personal growth occurs in bad or difficult times. If there is no pressure, then there is no progress.

Isaiah, said, do not be depressed. what causes depression? It is their past. The past is an event. You should also never confuse your past behavior with your value or worth. Also, never confuse your current job experience with your value or worth. You are more valuable than the experience and past. Let me give an example. If I have 50 grams of gold in my hands and I decide to throw it in the mud. Does that gold lose its value or worth? Assume the value was 50,000$. Does it lose the value?

You might have been raised in the slums of Soweto or Kibira or Namatala in Mbale or Katanga in Kampala, you are still valuable. It does not matter where you are born, but what you are born with is more important. It is the value of a thing that makes it valuable, but not what happens to it. If you are a victim of rape, abuse, or neglect, murder, failure, nepotism, you need to FORGET. Decide to forget by getting busy with your future. Set goals and get busy. Create your vision and fix your eyes on it. Some people are preoccupied with the past. Isaiah said do not disgraced and depressed… you will forget the shame of your youth. Memories is an act of the will. God said decide to forget. People keep creating memories if they decided to forget.

It does not matter where you are born, but what you are born with is more important.

If the person forgot their past, I can tell by their willingness to talk about (testify, testimony). They use it and share it with others. You will never be free from your past until you can use it and talk about it. Your past can be overcome and conquered when you can use it as a testimony. You can use the past, as an illustration, then you are free from it. It is no longer a threat to your future. Moses wrote his own experience. He wrote about killing a person. The same with Paul. These guys were free from the world. Every time, Paul stood before people, he would stand to talk about what he used what he did. he spoke about it, then he would say, BUT thanks be unto God….we saved by His grace. If you have been a drug addict, prostitute, killer, you can turn and use that to go to your future. When you tell people about the past, you have destroyed rumors. You can use the past to fight the devil. But people who deny their past are imprisoned.

You will never be free from your past until you can use it and talk about it. Your past can be overcome and conquered when you can use it as a testimony

Isaiah, used the word, reproach… guilt, shame. The problem with the past is we memorize things. We use memory too much. Use the memories as testimonies and you forget. Also, Isaiah 43: 18, says forget the former things and do not dwell in it. You need to write them off as bad debts. Dwell in is to live there. Some people have built homes in their past. There are people who live this way and they never move out the dwelling called the past.
There are people who live this way and they never move out the dwelling called the past.

In verse 25, says, even I brought out the transgression. God blots out the sins and removes. God has a dream for you. He forgets the past because of your future which is more valuable than the past. God removes failure so we can succeed. God cancels our losses so we win. Some people are not living their dreams, because they are afraid, ashamed, guilty, etc. Take God commands Hebrews 10:12, Ephesians 2:1, we were dead in sin. There is something powerful about NOW and BUT. Now is the time. BUT. I was a killer, but now…. I was a drunkard but now…I was abused but now…. I was cheated but now…. I was a failure but now……I was not an excellent student…. But separates the past from the future. BUT NOW! Now is the time to turn around your situation.

Thank you,

Dr. Samuel Odeke
